Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic Medicine is a system of primary health care that address the root cause of health conditions or a group of symptoms. In order to achieve a high level of wellness, we must view the body as a whole and, therefore, treat the whole body.
The goal of Naturopathic Medicine is not to suppress the body’s natural response by covering up symptoms. Instead, its goal is to treat the root imbalance in the body that causes symptoms or disease states. Symptoms are the “red flag” that there is a dis-ease state in the body. If a body’s root imbalance is found and treated, symptoms and disease states can be eliminated rather than simply hidden.
naturopathic livingBrio’s program Naturopathic Living is one of our Brio Living programs. We believe that Naturopathic Medicine can help you obtain prime mental, physical, and spiritual states using a both modern-day scientific research and centuries of empirical clinical experience.

chinese medicine treatmentAcupuncture is a complete medical system with a rich history that dates back over 5000 years.  Modern scientific research has shown excellent results in treating all kinds of  pain.  This ancient medical system is not only effective for pain relief, it is also very effective for nausea, digestive issues, hormonal imbalance, stress reduction, sleep problems, anxiety and depression.

Both Dr. Jeff and Dr. Carin have extensive training in Acupuncture completing their Masters degree in Chinese Medicine at Bastyr University in Washington.  They are both currently training under one of the top practitioners in North America, Dr. Richard Tan.

Your body is like a circuit board. In acupuncture, a combination of “switches” or acupuncture points are used to program a command that stimulates the body to self-repair. Acupuncture is beneficial for both acute and chronic conditions as well as helpful for prevention of illness and maintenance of health.
Most medications are taken every day. Similarly, acupuncture treatments need to be dosed regularly while symptoms are present. Initially 3 treatments per week are typically recommended until symptoms improve. If aggravating activities cannot be discontinued or symptoms are severe, more frequent treatments may be required. In other cases treatments may be less frequent.

An acupuncture appointment is between 30-60min in length. The first few minutes will consist of the acupuncturist gathering information about your concerns and performing any applicable physical exams.

Acupuncture is performed most often with the patient either sitting in a chair or laying down on the exam table.

Upon insertion of the needle you may feel a prick like a mosquito bite, local heaviness and tightness or no sensation at all.  Patients sit or lay down comfortably with the needles for 20-45min. Most patients find treatments to be relaxing and restful.

Bowen Therapy

bowen-therapyThe Bowen Technique is a holistic, non-invasive form of bodywork. In this technique, a few gentle moves are performed over muscles and soft tissues to stimulate the body to begin to heal itself, and to reset to its natural pain free blueprint.  The Bowen Technique is deeply relaxing, resetting the nervous system, and therefore, breaks the cycle of pain and inflammation occurring in the body.  Decreasing pain and inflammatory pathways allows the body to be in a restful or parasympathetic state, versus its previous stressed state.  Great things happen when the body is in a restful state: quality of sleep improves, nutrients to the cells improve, lymph drainage occurs, and toxins are removed from the body more efficiently. Being in a restful state allows the body to heal. This is why the theory of Bowen, like homeopathy, is “less is more.”

At Brio, Bowen practitioners describe Bowen as a type of physical “drainage” technique.  The whole body is addressed, rather than just the symptoms the patient presents to the clinic with.  The practitioner will perform a series of gentle movements along the spine and specific points on the body.  The movements are similar to the action of plucking a guitar string, and they work by subtly rolling muscle, nerve, tendon and connective tissue.  During the treatment, specific breaks are taken between sets of moves, where the practitioner physically leaves the room to allow the patient to reach a deeper state of relaxation, and in turn for the body to incorporate the current treatment.

Pain Free LivingAt Brio, Bowen Therapy is one of the forms of treatment or modality used in the Pain Free Living Program. Bowen is a simple non-invasive technique to treat a broad range of conditions including but not limited too: sports injuries; chronic lower back pain; and motor vehicle accidents. The Bowen Technique is an essential tool to facilitate whole body healing from chronic aches and pains. It is safe to use on anyone from infants to the elderly, and produces long lasting relief from pain and discomfort. Dr. Dhiman has directly studied under the creators of Bowtech™ – Ossie and Elaine Rentch; as well as with Dr. Manon Bolliger, founder of Bowen College.
Treatments are set once a week for three weeks, and then progress is reassessed after the three-treatment point. An average of 3-8 sessions is generally required for permanent reversal of pain. Bowen treatments should not be required on an ongoing basis, and results should hold unless there is a re-injury. After pain resolution, frequency of preventative treatments under the Pain-Free Living Program are determined.

Each person responds differently-at different rates and to different degrees. Each patient will respond according to their body’s own unique ability to heal.

The Bowen Technique is often a last stop for many who have run the circuit of various bodywork techniques, especially in the case of motor vehicle accidents, sciatica and chronic lower back pain.  The Bowen Technique is completely safe for newborns, pregnant moms, athletes, the very elderly and frail.

IV Therapy

Intravenous (I.V.) Therapy is the delivery of high doses of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, amino acids and botanicals directly into the bloodstream. This is, by far, the most efficient method of providing the body with therapeutic levels of nutrients to treat a wide array of conditions and illnesses.

When our body is sick, exhausted or dealing with inflammation, our cells lose the ability to absorb nutrients. This becomes a problem as all cells need nutrients to heal and repair itself. I.V. Therapy helps drive vitamins and minerals into our cells by providing a high enough concentration gradient. Once the cell has all the appropriate nutrients, it will create energy and guides the entire organism to be healthy again. Patients report improved recovery, decrease in fatigue and a feeling of well-being.
Under normal conditions, oral supplementation of vitamins and minerals will meet the needs of the general population. However, many patients have mal-absorption issues which means that nutrients from the foods or supplements they eat are not properly taken up into the body. It’s also important to note that people with diagnosed illnesses, such as diabetes, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, seasonal allergies or the common cold will require much higher doses of vitamins and minerals above the “Recommended Daily Allowance ” (RDA). Intravenous Nutrient Therapy is a very safe and effective way of delivering high doses of nutrients to the body.
Yes, I.V. therapy has been safely used worldwide for over 40 years. There are a few side effects to be aware of; since a needle will be placed in a vein, there may be bruising, bleeding or a risk of infection in that area. A warm sensation may be felt on the skin surface.

Laser Therapy

Also known as cold laser, low-level laser therapy uses light to stimulate tissue healing and pain relief.  Laser therapy has been used for many years on sports injuries, arthritic joints, nerve problems, neck/back pain and wounds.  There are over 300 clinical research articles published on the effectiveness of laser therapy in healing.
We can see in nature that all plants and trees absorb sunlight to grow and thrive.  This process is called photosynthesis.  Our human cells have this similar ability to absorb “low-level laser light” and produce energy for the cell.  This energy is used to stimulate and enhance the repair process in the body.
Low Level laser therapy is painless. Specialized lights are placed on the area of injury for a set amount of time. The average length of treatment is 30 minutes and patients may be seated or lying down.
Acute conditions often heal quickly and completely.  Chronic conditions can take longer (on average 8-12 treatments), but the alternatives are usually surgery or pain medication.
  • conditions treated by low level laser therapyAcute Injuries: muscle & tendon tears, fractures, sports & car injuries
  • Repetitive strain injuries, carpal tunnel, rotator cuff tears

Massage Therapy

Massage of back. Spa resort.

Did you know that RMT’s in BC are: (1) the most highly trained in North America; (2) Legislated by the government under the BC Health Professions Act;  (3) Continuously up to date with educational and professional development.
Increasingly, scientific research indicates that massage therapy doesn’t really ‘melt’ or ‘stretch fascia’ but interplays with the body’s nervous system to heal injured tissues.  Massage therapy stimulates incredible healing through biochemical and bio-electric effects at the cellular level to achieve a healthy elastic suppleness for the prevention of further overuse injury.
Your initial massage therapy session at Brio begins with a thorough assessment and treatment lasting 60 minutes. Your treatment plan may employ a number of modalities best suited to your condition, including; massage, manual therapy, joint mobilization, lymph drainage, stretching, heat application, rehabilitative exercises, as well as the more specialized techniques of Fascial Manipulation and Visceral Manipulation.
Developed by Italian physiotherapist Luigi Stecco, his technique is based on a combination of methods, including Acupuncture, Osteopathy, and deep friction massage to target pain and dysfunction throughout the fascial system. Fascia is the web of connective tissue that surrounds the muscles and other structures around our body.

A specialized assessment is used to find restrictions in the fascia and specific anatomical points are treated with deep friction massage affecting the deepest layers of fascia. No oil is used for this specific treatment and usually no more than six areas are treated in one session. It is best to wear comfortable shorts (and a sports bra).

Therapeutically induced inflammation may be a result, so expect a bit of soreness for a day or two but you should feel the pain from your previous injury/ dysfunction diminished and return of function. A follow up session, usually a week to ten days later, may focus on another line or group of points related to the injury.

Visceral Manipulation is a very gentle technique relying on enhanced palpation skills, developed by French Osteopath Jean-Pierre Barral. The fascial network provides structure to our muscles and continues its shaping and support to our vital organs. Not only does fascia provide support for our vital organs, it also allows the organs to expand, shift and slide within it’s boundaries. However, due to surgery, life stresses, illness and even bad habits, the natural rhythmic movements of our organs can become restricted, thus forming adhesions. These adhesions can create pain locally and can be referred to other parts of the body. An important part of the assessment for this technique is the skill called ‘Listening’ wherein tensions in the body’s fascial system can be detected by the therapist’s hand. This is done to locate the primary area of restriction and then provide a gentle nudging, as if to re-awaken the affected organ or tissues so the healing can begin. Loose, comfortable clothing is best worn for the Visceral Manipulation treatment.

Testimonials for Brio Integrative Health Centre

Our family has greatly benefited from the overall expertise, knowledge, dedication and commitment demonstrated by the whole Brio Integrative Health Team. That includes you too, Kyra! Thanks so much!
I have always looked forward to my visits with Dr. Dhiman. They have always been pleasant. She always listens to my problems and really looks into my health; not just to treat what’s visibly there but just so I can be overall healthy. Which is why I will continue seeing her as my doctor. She is an amazing person; and I can tell she really cares and wants to make everyone feel better.
Veronica S.
Since working with Dr. Lee, I have not only become more aware of my body’s limits, but also have gained a better understanding of how to balance and maintain the healthy level of stress.
Jane M.
However, the difference between last year when I began this journey to today is like comparing a brick wall to a speed bump. With a brick wall you consider yourself trapped while the speed bump is more a nuisance, but is not stopping you in your goals. Thanks for reading my story and good luck in your journey. I can tell you it’s worth it.
Dan R.
I sincerely know that I would not feel the level of wellness that I am currently experiencing without Dr. Lee’s and Dr. Dhiman’s plan of health and well being. I continue to refer friends and family to Brio Clinic and I am so grateful that a sheer stroke of luck led me to their door.
Diane C.
I have been in Dr. Jeffrey’s care for under one year, but I would not have believed these dramatic changes to my lifestyle could be possible in such a short time especially since I have a very clear appreciation of what didn’t’ work before, for a very long time. I know that I still have a ways to go, but in testing the waters as they say by slowly re-introducing foods that used to give me an immediate unfavorable response and no longer do, is proof that I am on the road to a full recovery and getting my life back.
Jake L.
I was first introduced to Bowen Therapy and Dr. Dhiman several years ago. I had been seeing a chiropractor for many years, as I had difficulty maintaining the correct or proper alignment. I am truly amazed at how such a non-invasive treatment can has such a relaxing and calming effect on my body and mind. Bowen Therapy has made such a positive impact, that I now having treatments 3-4 times a year and have reduced my chiropractic treatments, only twice last year! Dr. Dhiman has such a gentle and caring way with her patients, making you feel like family. I was so impressed with Dr. Dhiman that she is also my Naturopath. I would highly recommend Bowen Therapy and Dr. Dhiman!
